"RESPONDING TO THE CRISIS WITH A LITTLE MORE MORALITY"

Vinton Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist and Vice-President of Google, signs the preface of the French artist Fred Forest's catalogue, for the presentation of his last work on Second Life : "The Experimental Center of The Territory and Social Laboratory". The artist, on a serious as ironic and critic mode, set a tool to resolve the world wide crisis. There is always a permanent provocation dose with this artist ... Vinton Cerf had, ten years ago, stand at his witness with the artist Sophie Lavaud. Wedding celebrated by Sir the mayor of Issy les Moulineaux, who is Andre Santini, now French Minister of the reform of institutions ... Histortical wedding, because it was the first one taking place on the web, using Internet and a virtual reality program :

If you think Fred Forest is a joker, he is rather Doctor of Sorbonne and he won the great price of communication of the Biennial of Sao Paulo. He also represented France at the Biennial of Venice and Dokumenta of Cassel. That
would be a shame to miss this event, when Fred Forest wants to demonstrate that Marcel Duchamp is not the only Frenchman to have brought ideas to his American friends.
The crisis we are living through is not an economic crisis but in fact a moral crisis, a crisis of values and of meaning. And of course all the rest depends on this.
The Experimental Center of the Territory is an instrument for collective social and political thought whose purpose is garnering cooperative efforts at questioning the global crisis that is striking the entire planet head-on. This crisis, whose origins clearly identify with the failures of the speculative mechanisms that emblematically represent Wall Street, has the whole world in its grip.
According to Fred Forest, artists should act positively in the face of this crisis; they are now conversant with information technologies and must thus set up centers of symbolic Power to counteract other Powers. In our Internet-based society, artists must become players of meaning. The original instrument suggested by Fred Forest implements an exchange hub that collects and
stimulates suggestions for a better and more connected world less dependent profit as the be all and end all.

America clearly stated its desire for change when it elected its new President; it would therefore be desirable that the same need for change and regeneration be expressed in art. This determination is also shown in relation to systems and models that are nowadays obsolete in the context of the 21st century. Values that are manipulated and imposed by the only obligations of a market that benefits from the complacency of its Institutions. Because of our need for meaning, we as artists have to respond to this obligation.

PREFACE BY VINTON CERF :
I have known Fred Forest for more than ten years. I first met him in Autrans, France, at an annual symposium on the Internet and network. That year, the event offered a wealth of exchanges at a time when the Internet was developing rapidly. The event was attended by many researchers, politicians, managers and institutions. Among the interested parties in attendance, Fred Forest was the only artist. We bumped into each other in the heavily congested corridors typical of this type of conference, and started chatting. I was quite surprised to meet a fellow in a place where communication technologies enjoyed pride of place! Since we were in France, I would have rather thought of running into him in The Louvre, rue de Seine or the Latin Quarter where art galleries abound, or even the Centre Georges Pompidou. I had become used to only meeting engineers, managers or corporate leaders during my professional engagements.
In a few words, Forest convinced me, with his characteristic passion, that his presence was as legitimate as all those people who mulled around is during our coffee break, generously granted to us between two lectures. Thereafter, I got the opportunity to get to know his work better, to understand how and why this unique approach was closely linked to the medium of the Internet and its relationship with art. I understood that Fred Forest had always been exploring and searching for meaning. I realized how much he had already, in his head and his work, used the Internet even before the Internet existed! He was perfectly familiar with the notions of remote presence, ubiquity, real-time interactivity, network and hypertext. As a pioneer in the field of art, with artists such as Name June Paik, Roy Ascott and others, he had, from the 1970s, experienced the new aesthetic of a moving and changing society. That is why, in 1999, when he showed me his project of a wedding on the Internet with the digital artist Sophie Lavaud, I immediately accepted to stand as their witness. This worldwide event took place against the backdrop of Issy-les-Moulineaux in France and the minister, André Santini, known for his support to new technologies in the city, acted as the mayor, The interest of this wedding lay in the fact that it anticipated what is taking place today in terms of augmented reality, and that it introduced us, in advance, to the fact that a civic ceremony in cyberspace could also become a standard social ritual.
I will not here expand on the many uses and experiments the artist has undertaken since 1995 on the web. For his exhibition at the White Box, he currently uses Second Life as a medium, offering a laboratory of ideas for the future. The artist, often perceived as an agitator, uses Second Life as a collaborative and critical tool to examine a society in crisis, a society in which, with tools like the Internet, he is becoming player in his own right, promoting reason and solidarity for all and for a better world.

THE YEAR OF FRANCE IN BRAZIL FOR FRED FOREST 2009
FRED FOREST IN BRAZIL 2009
FROM APRIL TO NOVEMBER 2009
THE YEAR OF FRANCE IN BRAZIL FOR FRED FOREST
We can say, without a doubt, that this celebration, called "The Year of France in Brazil", is actually The Year of Fred Forest in Brazil.
The artist intends to organize exhibitions and presentations in different geographic locations and urban sites, even at the most unpredicted places, which aren't usually places where culture and exhibitions can be found.
Here, at the moment, the artist won't disclose those places to better hold the suspense, and afterwards, play with the surprise effect.
Fred has close ties with Brazil, where, after 1973, he carried out several exhibitions and interventions.
There was a very intense beginning with the Biennial of São Paulo, which gave him the best communication prize, as well as a detention by the political police for his recurrent provocations to the local military regime.
target=_new>http://www.webnetmuseum.org/html/en/expo-retr-fredforest/actions/08_en.htm#text
Fred then returns very regularly to Brazil, being invited by MAC USP, Itaú Cultural, Fundação Memorial da América Latina, private galleries and different universities ands museums, like Paço das Artes, that devoted him a significant retrospective in 2006.
Fred Forest says that between him and Brazil there has always been a history of love. A history that left its impression in his artistic career more than any other country, while God knows how much he travelled and exhibited his work all around the world.
Fred Forest is certainly the contemporary French artist most known in Brazil.
He owes his notoriety to the fact that he frequently made interventions in partnership with newspapers, radio and television stations.(Folha de Sao Paulo, O Estado, TV Globo etc...)
However, we have to confess that the French official cultural services that he often stigmatizes for their legendary sluggishness would have preferred to see him away from this celebration.
But Fred Forest's energy had reason to resist against all pitfalls that tried, in vain, to deviate him from his trajectory, which imperatively passes through the Year of France in Brazil. It would have been, indeed, absurd and aberrant not to have him present when the focus is exactly to illustrate those symbolic ties that unite the culture of these two countries.

* FRED FOREST PERSONAL EXHIBITION AT MAC USP (MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART USP) IBIRAPUERA PARK
FROM TUESDAY, APRIL 28 TO MAY 31, 2009
(vernissage on April 28th at 3 p.m.)
Fred Forest, who has always been an art pioneer, introduces for the first time Second Life to Brazilian museums, like he previously did with video in 1973, as emphasizes Cristina Freire in her work. Fred Forest can't stand being the second, he must always be the first... The project he presents "The Experimental Center and Social Laboratory of the Territory" is an interactive work that conciliates, at the same time, his theories about sociological art and communication aesthetics (two artistic movements of which he is co-founder) and his latest researches concerning the web 2.0 and the web 3.0.

It is, for the artist, an instrument that helps dealing with social problems and, above all, bringing us conscientiousness about them.

THE YEAR OF FRED FOREST
THE YEAR OF FRED FOREST IN BRAZIL AS OF FRANCE 2009 PART OF THE YEAR OF FRANCE IN BRAZIL
Fred Forest, surely the most famous French contemporary artist in Brazil, will be very present in regards to the Year of France in Brazil, with five leading projects endorsing the official labelling. Fred Forest, uncontested innovator in different domains ( Video-art, press experiences, telephone, radio, television, internet , second life…) has obtained the Communication Great Prize at the XIIth Biennale of Sao Paulo in 1973. Because of his contestation and repeated criticism against the military government in place at the time, he is being arrested by the political police and put into the DOPS, a torture department sadly known. This historical action still accounts for a great popularity until today.

He participates then, between 1975 and 2006, to a lot of private and public exhibitions at the MAC of Sao Paulo, Itau Cultural, Paço das Artes, Memorial Fund of Latin America, Modern Art museum of Rio and numerous university symposium. As a State P.H.D Doctor of La Sorbonne, he is a theorist and co-founder of two international artistic movements: sociological art ( 1974) and the aesthetic of communication ( 1983):

Here are the presented projects :
1. “Experimental artistic and social laboratory of the Territory” on Second Life, MAC ( Museum of Contemporary art), Parc Ibirapuera, Sao Paulo, starting April 22 2009)
Fred Forest has created on Second Life a virtual laboratory and ideas laboratory aiming to deal , through dialogue and participation, with society problems which are a challenge for the human specie survival on the planet. As a avatar, the internet surfers around the world will be able to go from a distance on the premises and contribute to the research. The infrastructures set up by the artist are both entertaining and efficient. ( Support: Capucine.net , Fondation Cartier for contemporary art).

2. " Cyber-ego or the virtual oracle”, UNIVERSITY PORTO ALEGRE, installation in situ and on Second Life, from April 28th, 2009
Cyber-ego is a mythical and collective entity which invites the public to a poetical reflexion on the meaning of our life and the values to promote to save the world and our own life from the global disaster. (Support: Capucine.net , Fondation Cartier for contemporary art). Translation Sandra Rey
3. Biennale 3000 from April 23rd, 2009., Centro Cultural Sao Paulo CCSP
Together with the Official Biennale of Sao Paulo, Fred Forest, in 2006, disrupting the traditional functioning network of culture, and anticipating, as a visionary artist, has proposed a new form of Biennale adequate to our world deeply transforming. This experimental biennale, without physical place, without curators, without budget, without selection and of planetary dimension, has revealed a lot of talents. Today, Fred Forest presents all of the work and videos made, and, because of its success, launches it again with a new graphic chart integrating the latest technologies in Web2. ( web site creation Gustave Bernier and René Pérol).

4. Fred Forest symposium April 2009 on the theme " sociological art and aesthetic of communication ", University of Sao Paulo conducted by Professor Gilberto Prado, April 2009
5. Fred Forest symposium April 2009 on the theme art and communication
Seminário de Pesquisa do PPG Artes Visuais-UFRGS Porto Alegre conducted by Professor Sandra Rey
6. Exhibition Gallery Sergio Caribe Sao Paulo ( date to be précised in 2009)
Illustrating the theories developed in his essay “ The invisible system work of art ”, Fred Forest innovates once more in an integral provocation since the work of art, created especially for this occasion, will simply be invisible. In this process using the new technologies, the artist simply completes Yve Klein the monochrome. Pierre Restany, in the texts written for him, has often compared him with Yves Klein, for some similar aspects of their thinking, their respective practic
